Our Vision & Strategic Priorities
Barwon South Western Regional Integrated Cancer Service (BSWRICS) is one of nine Integrated Cancer Services (ICS) in Victoria, working in partnership with health services and consumers to promote coordinated planning, system integration and improvement of cancer services across their respective regions. The ICS activity supports the achievement of three of the five goals stated in the Victorian Cancer Plan, namely that:
Victorians know their risk and have cancers detected earlier;
Victorians with cancer have timely access to optimal treatment; and
Victorians with cancer and their families live well.
BSWRICS will achieve the vision by:
understanding the needs to people affected by cancer;
building and supporting collaboration between health professionals, health services and consumers;
driving quality improvement in cancer;
supporting the development of the cancer workforce; and
facilitating system-wide engagement in cancer research.
BSWRICS undertakes its role by consulting and collaborating with regional health partners and consumers. Our work is governed by a Governance Committee comprising key regional stakeholders from the public and private sector. A Clinical Advisory Group provides multidisciplinary clinical advice in relation to BSWRICS initiatives. In addition, a Memorandum of Understanding between health service providers across the Barwon South West region guides the collaborative effort towards cancer service improvement.

Cancer in our region
The BSWRICS catchment covers approximately 33,000 square kilometres, stretching from the tip of the Queenscliff Heads across to the South Australian Border. It is home to Geelong, Victoria's largest provincial urban centre, and a number of significant regional towns including Hamilton, Portland, Colac and Warrnambool. The current population of the Barwon South West region is recorded at 380,000. We have ten sites providing cancer care:

To improve the experience and outcomes for people with cancer and their families, BSWRICS has well formed partnerships with Health Services across the Barwon South Western region.
We continue to build relationships with private hospitals and providers, pathology and imaging services, primary care networks and in research to improve service integration and coordination through care that is multidisciplinary, supportive and responsive to the needs of communities across the region.
